We tend to think of pain as being caused by damage to nerve cells that then send messages of pain to the brain. In fact it is much more complex than that. Pain is a complex construct, composed of past remembered pain, of present pain experience and of anticipated pain in the future. Of course if you suffer from the agonising grind of continuous chronic pain this is of no consolation.
We know that those of you with chronic pain, rather than becoming desensitised as a result of having it around so much, actually become more sensitive to pain. This appears to result from the central nervous systems attempt to adjust and adapt to the ongoing painful stimulation. Fortunately Hypnosis can help reverse or control the process.
In Liege Hospital, Belgium, anaesthetists routinely use hypnosis as an effective alternative to general anaesthesia. So far, the Liege team has used this technique in over 4,800 major and minor operations. Pain is very complex but we know there a number of ways in which we can use Hypnosis to effect the way that chronic pain is felt.
Hypnotherapy has made me I feel like my old self again. I am more positive, more confident, more able. I may have fibromyalgia but I now control it - it no longer controls me.
Hypnotherapy for Chronic Pain
Most people will experience pain in their life at some time. Most of the time we can take an over the counter painkiller that will effectively take away that pain.
However, there are many people whose pain doesn't just disappear after a few days or weeks. Unfortunately, despite the wonderful advances in modern pharmaceuticals and medical understanding, too many people still suffer from long term chronic pain i.e. pain that has lasted longer than six months. There are various causes of pain including cancer, trauma, arthritis or fibromyalgia to name a few. People trying to cope with these conditions can find their mental well-being deteriorates. Depression, anxiety about the future or intense frustration about restrictions on every day activities can set in. Life can become so dominated by the 'condition' that activities become increasingly curtailed or avoided altogether. Quality of life can plummet. This is the point at which hypnotherapy can step in and help turn things right around. Trials have been conducted testing the use of hypnosis compared with other forms of treatment. Those patients who received a course of hypnosis showed a significant improvement in symptoms. Their experience of pain was reduced!
A scientific peer review of 13 clinical trials dealing with common causes of chronic pain writes "The efficacy of hypnosis in reducing pain was consistently confirmed for a wide variety of chronic pain conditions" - [ Hypnotherapy for the Management of Chronic Pain. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2752362/ ]
